The Midnight Baseball Game
Young Toby couldn't sleep. Through his window, he watched a bright orange moon hang low in the sky. Something magical was happening tonight. He grabbed his baseball glove and tiptoed outside.
In the meadow beyond his house, Toby discovered something amazing. Animals had gathered for a midnight baseball game! A clever fox stood at home plate, holding a bat made from a sturdy branch. In the outfield, a massive but gentle bull snorted happily, ready to catch any ball that came his way.
"Want to play?" asked the fox, her eyes twinkling like stars.
Toby nodded, his heart racing with excitement. He joined the fox's team. The bull played for the other team, along with rabbits and raccoons.
The game was magical. Every time someone hit the baseball, it glowed brighter than a firefly. The bull could leap surprisingly high, catching balls with his giant horns. The fox was quick and clever, sliding into bases like a shadow.
Suddenly, dark clouds gathered overhead. CRACK! A bolt of lightning split the sky, illuminating the entire meadow. But this wasn't scary lightning — it was purple and pink, like cotton candy.
"The Lightning Ball!" the fox exclaimed. "Someone hit the Lightning Ball, and now the game becomes enchanted!"
Toby stepped up to bat. The baseball shimmered with rainbow colors. He swung with all his might. WHACK! The ball soared into the clouds, leaving a trail of sparkles.
The bull jumped higher than ever, his hooves barely touching the ground. He caught the ball, but instead of getting Toby out, the ball burst into hundreds of butterflies.
"Everyone wins when we play together," the bull said wisely.
The animals cheered, and Toby felt warmer than any blanket. The orange moon smiled down at them all.
As dawn approached, the animals promised to return. Toby crawled back into bed, his baseball glove still on his hand. He knew that friendship and fun were the best magic of all.
And sometimes, if you look very carefully on nights with an orange moon, you can still see them playing — the clever fox, the gentle bull, and all their friends, under skies filled with lightning that looks more like fireworks than storms.
