The Midnight Baseball Bull
Lily couldn't sleep. The moonlight spilled through her window like silver syrup, calling her outside. She tiptoed past her snoring dog and into the backyard.
That's when she saw it—a magnificent white bull standing by the old swimming pool. But this wasn't any ordinary bull. His coat shimmered like pearls, and his horns glowed with stardust. He was holding a baseball bat between his teeth!
Lily gasped. The bull turned his massive head and winked one enormous, twinkling eye.
"Are you a spy?" the bull asked gently. His voice sounded like wind chimes.
"I... I think so," Lily whispered, her heart pounding like a drum.
The bull chuckled. "Well, Spy Lily, would you like to play baseball?"
"In the pool?" she asked, confused.
"Watch!" The bull tossed the baseball into the air. *SPLASH!* It hit the water and didn't sink. Instead, it bounced like magic. *BOING, BOING, BOING!* The pool had transformed into a bouncy, moonlit field.
Lily's eyes grew wide as dinner plates. "This is MAGIC!"
"Magic is everywhere," said the bull. "You just have to believe." He tossed her a glowing baseball. "I'm Barnaby, by the way. I teach children who can't sleep that the world is full of wonders."
They played baseball until dawn. Lily hit home runs that turned into shooting stars. Barnaby caught flies in his teeth and made constellations appear in the sky. The baseball became a moon, then a sun, then a bouncing ball of pure joy.
As the first morning bird sang, Barnaby grew transparent.
"Will I ever see you again?" Lily called out.
"Whenever you can't sleep and the moon is bright," Barnaby's voice floated like a cloud. "Remember, Spy Lily—magic loves curious hearts."
Lily woke up in her bed, her baseball glove on her pillow. She smiled, knowing that somewhere in the moonlight, a friendly bull was waiting for another game.
And whenever she couldn't sleep, she'd look at the stars and wave. Sometimes, if she looked very carefully, she could still see Barnaby's constellation swinging his bat across the night sky.
