The Midnight Backyard Game
Lily loved her old baseball glove. It smelled like summer and dreams. One hot night, she crept outside to practice pitching under the stars. The backyard pool shimmered like liquid moonlight.
Something rustled in the bushes. A tiny calico cat emerged, wearing what looked like a miniature baseball cap. "You're late," the cat said. "The game starts at midnight."
Lily rubbed her eyes. "Cats don't talk."
"This one does." The cat flicked her tail. "Follow."
They walked to the park, where something amazing waited. A great sphinx made of moonlight and baseball cards sat beside home plate. Her riddle-eyes glowed like fireflies.
"I've been waiting centuries for someone who can hit my curveball," the sphinx purred.
From the outfield emerged a massive brown bear, wearing catcher's gear and gently holding a baseball between his claws. "I'm Benny," the bear rumbled softly. "Won't you play?"
Lily's heart raced with wonder. This was the best night ever!
The sphinx pitched. The ball danced through the air like a firefly. Lily swung—and connected! The ball soared into the starry sky and turned into a shooting star.
"You're the chosen one," the sphinx said. "Only the pure of heart can hit moonlight baseballs."
They played until dawn, Lily and the cat, the sphinx and the bear. When the first sunbeams touched the grass, her new friends faded like morning mist.
"Will I see you again?" Lily called.
The calico cat's voice floated on the breeze. "Whenever you believe in magic, we'll be there."
Lily walked home, her baseball glove glowing faintly. Some games are more than games. Some friendships are more than they seem. And sometimes, the most wonderful adventures happen when you least expect them.
