The Messy-Haired Friend

Lily loved the old cable car that rattled up the mountain every Saturday. It was painted bright yellow like a sunshine beam, and it carried her to her favorite place in the whole world — Grandma's house at the top.

But one foggy afternoon, the cable car stopped halfway up the mountain. Lily peered through the mist and saw a figure standing on a rocky ledge. Her heart beat fast.

"Hello?" she called out.

The figure turned around. It was a boy with the wildest, craziest hair Lily had ever seen — it stuck out in every direction like he'd been struck by lightning! His clothes were messy and covered in leaves.

"Are you... are you a zombie?" Lily whispered, remembering the scary creatures from her big brother's video games.

The boy laughed, and it sounded like twinkling bells. "No! I'm Zane, and I'm definitely NOT a zombie. I'm just looking for my kitten, Whiskers. She ran off when the cable made that loud SCREECH sound."

Lily's fear melted away. "I'll help you find her!"

Together, they searched behind rocks and under bushes. Zane told Lily that his hair got so crazy because he'd been camping for three days, looking for Whiskers. "My mom says my hair has a mind of its own," he giggled.

Suddenly, a soft meow echoed from inside an old cable spool lying near the track. There was Whiskers, curled up cozy and warm!

"You found her!" Zane cheered. "Thank you, Lily! Will you be my friend?"

"Yes!" Lily smiled. "And next time, I'll bring a hairbrush for that wild hair of yours!"

From that day on, Lily and Zane rode the cable car together every weekend. And Lily learned that things that seem scary at first might just be new friends waiting to be found — even if they do have very messy hair!
