The Mermaid's Secret Game

Lily loved her grandmother's old blue hat. It was wide-brimmed and speckled with tiny silver stars that shimmered in sunlight. Every Saturday, she wore it to the lake.

One afternoon, dark clouds gathered. Lily was already swimming when lightning flashed across the sky. The bolt struck the water's surface, but instead of scary, it created bubbles of rainbow light. Lily dove deeper to see.

That's when she noticed someone watching her.

A small mermaid with green scales and curly hair was hiding behind a rock. The mermaid was a spy! But not a scary spy—a curious one who peeked out with wide eyes.

"Hello!" Lily called, bubbles rising from her lips.

The mermaid giggled and swam closer. "I'm Marina. I've never seen a human with such a magical hat."

Lily's hat had floated off during her dive. Marina caught it gently and placed it back on Lily's head.

"Want to play?" Marina asked, pulling out two small wooden paddles. "This is padel—my favorite game!"

They hit a special pearl back and forth. The pearl glowed with every hit, leaving trails of light in the water. Fish gathered to watch, forming a glittering audience.

"You're really good," Lily said, laughing as she swam to hit the pearl.

"You too!" Marina smiled. "Humans usually can't play underwater."

They played until the rainbow bubbles faded. As the sky cleared, Marina pressed something into Lily's hand—a tiny pearl that still glowed.

"Friendship token," Marina whispered. "Come back next Saturday?"

Lily nodded, promising to return. As she swam to shore, she realized something wonderful: the lightning that seemed scary had led her to the best friend she could ever imagine.

Sometimes, the most magical adventures come from unexpected moments—and true friendship can be found anywhere, even under the waves.
