The Mechanical Bull Incident

My hair looked like a disaster zone, courtesy of a box dye job gone wrong. I'd spent twenty minutes staring at the mirror, debating between washing it out or leaning into the accidentally vibrant purple. In the end, I'd grabbed my beat-up baseball hat and jammed it over my head.

"You look fine," Maya said, but she was grinning like she knew I was lying to myself. "It's a party, not a photoshoot."

Easy for her to say. Maya was the friend who could pull off literally anything—mis-matched socks, questionable fashion choices, that time she'd showed up to school with temporary blue glitter in her hair. Me? I needed a game plan.

The party was at Tyler's farmhouse, which apparently meant a country music playlist, fairy lights strung up in the barn, and—because apparently this was a thing people did—a mechanical bull in the corner.

"No way," I said.

"Way." Maya's eyes lit up. "I dare you."

I looked at the bull. It was honestly kind of ridiculous—this fake leather contraption bucking around while everyone cheered like they were at a rodeo. But then I saw Tyler's cousin Chloe, who I'd been lowkey crushing on since September, watching with this amused smile, and something in me just... clicked.

My hat was already off before I could overthink it, revealing the purple hair disaster underneath.

"Whoa, nice hair!" someone called out, and then suddenly people were cheering, not for the bull but for me, this ridiculous girl with terrible hair and zero coordination climbing onto a mechanical bull at a party in the middle of nowhere.

The ride lasted maybe twelve seconds before I went flying off into the hay bales, purple hair everywhere, my hat lost somewhere in the chaos. But as I lay there laughing so hard I couldn't breathe, with Maya doubled over next to me and Chloe helping me up and actually introducing herself like we were real people who talked to each other, I realized something pretty important.

Sometimes the disasters are exactly what you need.

And my hair actually kind of looked cool in the fairy lights.
