The Match Point Moment

iphonebearpadel

Maya's palms were sweating, and it wasn't just the July heat. At fifteen, she'd mastered the art of avoiding physical activity—her specialty was lying on her bed scrolling through TikTok while her friends posted stories about their "athletic" summer adventures.

"You'll love it," her mom had promised. "Padel is like tennis but cooler."

Cooler, maybe. If by cooler you meant watching your crush from school, Liam, absolutely crushing it on the court next to yours while you swung at air and missed.

Maya's iphone buzzed in her pocket. Again. Probably another group chat notification about tonight's party—the one she wasn't sure she was invited to anymore, not since Jordan had started acting weird after what happened at the movies last week. The social anxiety was giving her heart palpitations, which honestly made her pathetic serve even worse.

"Bear with me," her instructor said, demonstrating the proper grip. "You'll get it."

Maya snorted. The nickname wasn't wrong—Coach Martinez was built like a grizzly, with arms that could probably crush a coconut. But she couldn't focus, not with Liam laughing two courts over at something his friend said. Something that was probably funnier than anything she'd ever said.

Then it happened—her phone slipped from her pocket mid-swing, skidding across the court just as Liam walked by.

"Nice save," he said, winking as he retrieved it.

Maya felt her face burning hotter than the pavement. Her notifications were visible on the screen. THE group chat. The one where Jordan had probably been talking about her.

"Thanks," she managed, her voice barely a whisper.

They stood there for what felt like forever but was probably five seconds. The coach's voice faded, the other courts became background noise, and suddenly it was just the two of them, clutching this stupid piece of glass that had been ruling her life all summer.

"You coming to Jake's tonight?" Liam asked, like it was the most normal question in the world. Like he hadn't just witnessed her most embarrassing moment.

Maya stared at him. The notifications, the overthinking, the anxiety about whether she was cool enough, popular enough—it all seemed so ridiculous in that moment.

"Yeah," she said, actually meaning it for the first time all summer. "Yeah, I think I am."

Liam grinned. "Good. Save me a dance?"

"Maybe," she called back as he walked away, already feeling lighter. "If you can beat me at padel."

Coach Martinez—aka Bear—laughed from behind her. "Now that's the spirit, Maya. But don't make promises you can't keep."
