The Match Point Message

Maya's thumbs hovered over her iPhone screen, stomach doing that familiar flip-flop thing. Liam had actually watched her story—the one where she'd dramatically posted a selfie with a padel racket captioned "Day 1 of becoming a pro athlete lol." He'd even reacted with a fire emoji.

"You're staring again," said Chloe, tossing an orange at Maya's head. Maya caught it reflexively, but barely felt the impact. Her entire focus was on the group chat blowing up about Jordan's party this Friday. Liam would be there. The pressure to say something cool, to not be the girl who brought a smoothie to a high school house party, was suddenly very real.

Her golden retriever, Buster, nosed at her hand, sensing the anxiety radiating off her like heat waves. He was the only one who knew about the spinach smoothie experiment that had ended violently in the kitchen sink yesterday. "Disgusting," she'd whispered to him, green sludge dripping from her chin. He'd just licked her face and wagged his tail like, solid effort though.

"So are you going?" Chloe asked, already knowing the answer.

Maya looked at the orange in her hand, then at her phone where Liam's typing bubble appeared and vanished and appeared again. The social calculus of being fifteen was exhausting, but she was tired of watching from the sidelines while other people lived loudly and posted about it later.

"Yeah," Maya said, peeling the orange. "I'm going. And I'm gonna actually talk to him this time. No more watching stories and hoping he notices me."

Buster barked once, like, finally. Chloe nodded approvingly. And somewhere across town, Liam hit send on a message that would change everything: "That padel form was terrible. You need lessons 😉"
