The Match Point

Elena watched from the sidelines as her daughter, Sofia, served across the padel court. The ball hit the wire mesh fence with a hollow clang that echoed the emptiness in Elena's chest. Three years since the divorce, and she still felt phantom pains where her marriage used to be.

"She's got your backhand," Mark said, settling onto the bench beside her. He wore that ridiculous straw hat she'd bought him in Barcelona—the one she'd secretly hated, the one he refused to throw away because "you gave it to me, El."

Elena smoothed her skirt. "She has your determination."

"She has spinach in her teeth," Mark said, too casually.

Elena turned to him. Really looked at him. The lines around his eyes had deepened. He'd stopped dyeing his hair. But his smile—that same crooked, knowing smile that had undone her in a college library twenty-three years ago.

"You're not going to tell her?"

"She's winning, Elena. Let her have this."

Sofia smashed the ball past her opponent. The match point. The small crowd cheered. Their daughter pumped her fist, then immediately scanned the sidelines, grinning wildly when she spotted them together.

Mark reached for Elena's hand. His palm was warm, familiar. "I was thinking—"

"Don't," she said, but didn't pull away.

"The padel club needs mixed doubles partners for the summer league."

Elena watched Sofia laughing with her opponent, that easy joy they used to have. "We were terrible partners."

"We were young," Mark said. "We're different now."

The hat shaded his eyes, but she could see the hope there. Dangerous, fragile hope. Like spinach sprouting through concrete cracks—impossible, persistent, utterly foolish.

Sofia jogged over, breathless. "Did you see? Did you see?"

"Every point," Elena said, squeezing Mark's hand before letting go. "Your father was just saying we might play mixed doubles this summer."

Sofia's eyes widened. "Really?"

Elena looked at Mark. "One season. We see how it goes."

"One season," he agreed, touching the brim of his hat.

Behind them, someone opened a container of food. The smell of garlic and spinach drifted through the air. Elena breathed it in. Something green. Something that could grow again.
