The Mascot's Secret
Maya pulled the snapback lower, shielding her eyes like armor. First house party. First time wearing Jordan's lucky hat. First time feeling like she might actually belong.
"Yo, who wants to be the bear?" Tyler called out, gesturing to the discarded mascot head on the kitchen counter. Some guy in the corner had spent the first hour of the party wearing it, until someone said it smelled like middle school trauma.
"I got next." Cameron—Maya's crush since September—grabbed the bear head. "Watch this."
The bear lumbered toward the sliding glass door where a golden retriever puppy sat, tail thumping against the wood. Cameron must've thought he'd look cool. Instead, he tripped over his own限量版 Jordans, face-planting while the bear head rolled away like a severed identity.
Everyone lost it. Not mean laughter—just the kind that happens when someone's dignity crashes spectacularly.
But then something shifted. Cameron stayed down on one knee, scratching the dog behind its ears. The bear head sat empty between them, plastic grin frozen in perpetual joy.
"Hey," Maya said, suddenly standing beside him. She adjusted Jordan's hat, then took it off and held it out. "Trade you."
"What?"
"The bear head. For the hat."
Cameron blinked. Then he laughed—really laughed. "Deal."
The rest of the night became something else entirely. They took turns wearing the bear head. The dog followed them like they were its new pack. Jordan found them later and said Maya looked better in the hat anyway.
At 2 AM, walking home with bear-ears impressions still visible on her forehead, Maya realized something important: the coolest version of herself wasn't the one hiding under Jordan's lucky hat. It was the one who'd put on a ridiculous mascot head and danced with a stranger's dog.
She'd do it again. Bear head and all.
