The Mascot Manifesto

My best friend Jenna dared me to wear it. The mascot head. A grinning brown bear with dead plastic eyes and fur that smelled like three generations of teenage sweat. I slipped it over my head, the world disappearing into a muffled, fuzzy darkness.

"Dude," Jenna whispered between giggles in the hallway. "You're literally about to bear witness to your own social suicide."

"Whatever," I said, but my voice came out muffled. Students parted like the Red Sea, some filming, others staring like I'd lost my mind. The weird thing was, inside that bear head, I felt powerful. Anonymous. Unstoppable.

Then I saw him.

Tyler, leaning against his locker with that effortless cool that made my stomach twist. He was wearing the hat – my lucky vintage UCLA baseball cap that I'd left in his car two weeks ago. The one I'd been too scared to ask for back.

I marched up to him, bear head and all. "That's my hat."

Tyler barely looked up. "Finders keepers, bear boy."

Something snapped. Maybe it was the anonymity. Maybe it was weeks of watching him and his pyramid scheme of popularity – how everyone orbited around him like he was some kind of social currency. But I didn't back down.

"Give it back, Tyler."

He actually laughed. "Or what? You'll maul me?"

I grabbed the hat right off his head. The hallway went dead silent. Tyler stared at me like I'd grown a second head – which, technically, I had.

"You're dead," he said quietly.

"Then come at the bear, bro," Jenna yelled from behind me.

Tyler didn't. Instead, he smirked. "You know what? You've got balls, bear boy." He fist-bumped my bear paw. "Keep the hat. It looks better on you anyway."

As I walked away, bear head held high, people started cheering. Someone chanted "BEAR BOY" and then everyone joined in. Jenna was losing it, snapchatting everything.

I never did become popular-popular. But that day? I learned that sometimes you have to put on a ridiculous bear head and demand your hat back to find out who actually runs your own pyramid scheme of a life.

Spoiler: It's you.
