The Mascot Dilemma

Jordan adjusted their stolen bear head for the fifteenth time, sweating through their hoodie. Homecoming game, senior year, and they'd somehow volunteered to be the mascot - which meant wearing a thirty-pound polyester beast costume in ninety-degree weather while their crush watched from the cheerleading block.

"You got this, Jo," Maya whispered, handing them a water bottle. "Just don't trip over your own giant feet again."

Jordan's dog, Buster, had decided this was the perfect moment to escape the backyard. Their mom had called five minutes ago: "Your bull of a dog is chasing the mailman again. Fix it or you're grounded."

"I can't leave now," Jordan hissed into their phone. "I'm literally about to run onto the field."

"Then you better hope Buster doesn't eat someone's homework. Good luck explaining that to Dad."

The football team burst through their banner, and the crowd went wild. This was it - their moment to finally prove they weren't just the quiet kid in AP Bio. Jordan raised their fuzzy arms, ready to lead the victory charge, when they saw Buster trotting onto the field, tail wagging like he owned the place.

"Oh no," Maya groaned.

The announcer's voice boomed: "AND IT LOOKS LIKE OUR BEAR HAS SOME COMPANY!"

Buster made a beeline for the visiting team's mascot - some poor guy dressed as a bulldog. The collision was inevitable. One hundred pounds of enthusiastic golden retriever met forty pounds of confused human in a polyester suit, and suddenly Jordan was scrambling to separate two"animals" while the entire student section lost it.

Coach Miller was shouting something about disciplinary action, but Jordan's crush was laughing so hard she fell off the cheerleading block. Their friends' group chat was already blowing up: BEAR VS DOG VS BULL - THE TRILOGY.

Later, as Jordan sat in the principal's office with Buster asleep on their feet, they got a notification from Taylor: "that was the most legendary thing i've ever seen. dinner friday?"

Some punishments were totally worth it.
