The Market of Lost Things

bearzombiebulliphone

Mara's iPhone lay on the hotel nightstand, its screen lighting up every three minutes with notifications she no longer cared to read. Bull market, bear market, it was all the same when you hadn't slept in three weeks. She'd become something else—something hollowed out and moving on instinct, a zombie in a tailored suit, executing trades with fingers that felt like they belonged to someone else.

The conference had been her escape attempt. A chance to remember who she was before the algorithms took over. But standing at the edge of the hotel property at 2 AM, watching a black bear amble across the lawn, she realized there was no going back. The bear moved with purpose Mara had forgotten existed. It wasn't bullish or bearish. It just was.

Her thumb hovered over her phone's screen. One tap could sell everything. One tap could change everything.

She watched the bear pause at a trash bin, nose testing the air, making a decision Mara couldn't seem to make. It had never known a market, never measured its worth in fractions of a percent. It simply survived.

Mara's phone buzzed. Margin call.

She left it on the nightstand. In the morning, she would face whatever came—bull, bear, or something that didn't fit any chart she'd ever studied. For now, she watched the bear disappear into the dark, more alive than she'd been in years.
