The Magician's Swimming Hat
Lily was swimming in her bathtub when she noticed something strange. Her favorite purple hat — the one with silver stars — was floating on the water like a little boat.
"Come aboard!" whispered a tiny voice.
Lily gasped. A goldfish with orange scales like sunset was perched on the brim of her hat. But this was no ordinary goldfish. It wore a monocle and a bowtie.
"I'm Captain Finnick," said the goldfish. "And you've just been recruited for the most important quest in magical history."
"In my bathtub?" asked Lily.
"Every great adventure begins somewhere!" Finnick flicked his tail. "We must reach the Great Pyramid before sunset. The Emerald Pharaoh has stolen all the world's spinach, and without it, the Magic Garden will wither."
Lily blinked. "Spinach?"
"Magic spinach! It gives superheroes their strength and dragons their fire-breath. The Emerald Pharaoh wants it all for himself."
Lily didn't hesitate. She climbed onto her hat, which suddenly grew to the size of a real sailboat. The bathroom walls dissolved into swirling mist. When it cleared, they were gliding across an emerald-green river that flowed through the sky.
"Hold tight!" Finnick called as they approached a magnificent golden pyramid floating among the clouds.
The pyramid's entrance was guarded by a giant stone cat. "Answer my riddle," the cat purred, "or remain swimming in the sky river forever."
Lily's heart raced.
"What is green when fresh, brown when cooked, and makes muscles strong?"
"Spinach!" Lily shouted.
The cat bowed and stepped aside. Inside the pyramid, the Emerald Pharaoh sat on a throne made entirely of spinach cans.
"I wanted to be the strongest in all the realms," the Pharaoh admitted sadly. "But eating alone makes me lonely."
Lily thought of her lunch at school. "When we share, everyone gets stronger."
The Pharaoh's eyes widened. "I never thought of that."
He waved his hand, and the spinach cans vanished. In their place appeared seeds. "Plant these everywhere. Share the harvest."
Lily and Finnick returned home as heroes, sailing through clouds now painted sunset-orange by Captain Finnick himself. That night, Lily ate her spinach with a smile, imagining where her magical hat might take her next.
