The Magical Pool Party

Lily's favorite stuffed bear, Barnaby, sat on her bed wearing his bright yellow hat with a sparkly star. It was the perfect summer day for the pool party. Lily grabbed Barnaby and ran outside, her flip-flops flapping against the sidewalk.

The neighborhood pool sparkled like blue diamonds under the sun. Children splashed and laughed. Lily jumped in, making a giant splash! But when she surfaced, something was wrong. Barnaby had floated away!

"Barnaby!" Lily cried, swimming toward the deep end. There, floating near the pool drain, was her bear without his yellow hat.

Suddenly, the water began to bubble. Green smoke swirled above the pool. From the water emerged a zombie—but not a scary one. This zombie wore rainbow suspenders and a polka-dotted tie. He held Barnaby's yellow hat in his green hand.

"Looking for this?" asked the zombie, whose name was Zed. He smiled, showing just one tooth. "I'm the Pool Guardian Zombie. I keep lost things safe."

Lily wasn't scared. Zed looked friendly, like a big green grandpa. "Yes! That's Barnaby's hat!"

Zed laughed, a sound like bubbles popping. "I'll trade it. But first, you must answer my riddle: What has to be wet before you can dry it?"

Lily thought hard. She looked at the towel on her chair. "A towel!"

"Correct!" Zed cheered. He placed the yellow hat on Barnaby's head and did a happy zombie dance, splashing water everywhere. All the children clapped. Even the grumpy lifeguard smiled.

"Wait!" Lily said. "Why are you a zombie at a pool?"

Zed's green face wrinkled thoughtfully. "Because everyone deserves friends, even zombies. And pools are where people come together to have fun. Where there's fun, there's friendship. Where there's friendship, there's no reason to be scary."

Lily understood. She invited Zed to play. They had a splash contest, a diving contest, and even taught Zed to swim. By the end of the day, Zed wasn't just the Pool Guardian Zombie anymore. He was Zed the friend.

As the sun set, Lily walked home holding Barnaby, who wore his yellow hat proudly. She waved goodbye to Zed, who was already planning tomorrow's pool games.

"Mom!" Lily called. "I made a new friend today! And you'll never guess—he's a zombie who loves pool parties!"

Some friendships start in the most unexpected ways. Sometimes, all it takes is a missing hat, a brave question, and an open heart to find magic in the most unusual places.
