The Magical Pool in the Backyard
Lily pushed aside the tall bushes behind her garage and gasped. There, sparkling in the morning sunlight, was a crystal-clear pool she had never seen before. Its water shimmered with colors like a rainbow had melted into it.
"Hello there," whispered a voice. Lily jumped and turned to see a small orange fox sitting calmly on a rock. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find this place."
"You can talk?" Lily asked, her eyes wide.
"Many things can talk here," the fox replied with a clever smile. "But first, you must solve a riddle to enter the magical world beyond the pool."
Suddenly, the water began to swirl and form a shape—a beautiful sphinx with sparkling blue wings rose from the surface. "I am the Guardian of Dreams," the sphinx said in a voice like gentle bells. "Answer my riddle correctly, and you may pass. What has fingers but cannot hold anything?"
Lily thought hard. She remembered her mom's iPhone, which had a touchscreen with fingerprints all over it. "A phone screen!" she exclaimed.
"Correct!" the sphinx cheered, clapping her paws together. "You may enter our world."
Lily stepped through the pool and found herself in a meadow filled with glowing flowers. Friendly creatures played games together—rabbits hopping through hoops, bears balancing on balls, and squirrels racing. They were playing baseball with a ball that sparkled like a tiny star.
"Would you like to play?" asked the fox, who had followed her through. "In this world, everyone works together, and nobody keeps score."
Lily spent the afternoon playing magical baseball, making new friends, and learning that kindness matters more than winning. When it was time to leave, the sphinx gave her a small glowing stone. "Whenever you feel lonely, hold this and remember: true friendship is the greatest magic of all."
Back in her yard, the pool had disappeared, but the fox winked from behind the bushes before scampering away. Lily smiled, touching the warm stone in her pocket. She knew she would never forget the day she discovered that magic exists for those who believe in friendship and wonder.
