The Magical Orange Grove
Lily loved walking through her grandmother's orange grove. The trees were like old friends, their branches heavy with bright fruit that smelled like sunshine and sweet dreams.
One autumn afternoon, Lily's golden retriever Max and her neighbor's cat Whiskers followed her into the grove. The dog and cat usually chased each other, but today they walked side by side, their ears perked up as if listening to something magical.
"What is it, Max?" Lily asked, scratching behind his ears. Max wagged his tail and darted toward the oldest orange tree. Whiskers followed, hopping gracefully over fallen leaves.
Under the ancient tree, they found something surprising. A small figure with greenish skin and tattered clothes was sitting against the trunk, holding an orange. It looked like a zombie from Lily's storybooks, but instead of being scary, it was crying silently.
"Hello?" Lily whispered, staying close to Max. The figure looked up with sad eyes.
"I... I was cursed," it said in a raspy voice. "A wizard said only friendship and the sweetest fruit could break the spell. But everyone runs away when they see me."
Whiskers the cat surprised everyone by rubbing against the zombie's leg, purring loudly. Max licked its cheek. Lily knelt down and handed the creature the perfect orange she'd picked earlier.
"We're not running away," Lily said softly. "Would you like to be our friend?"
As the zombie took a bite of the orange, something magical happened. The greenish color faded, revealing a boy about Lily's age with bright red hair and a warm smile. The tattered clothes transformed into a shiny green outfit.
"Thank you," the boy said, his voice clear and musical. "I'm Oliver. I've been stuck like that for three hundred years."
The orange grove sparkled with golden light. Oliver stood up and hugged Max, then Whiskers, and finally Lily. From that day on, the three children and two animals played in the orange grove every day, and the oranges there became the sweetest in all the land.
Lily learned that sometimes, the scariest-looking things just need a little kindness - and that friendship is the most powerful magic of all.
