The Magical Hat's Dream Kingdom

Lily loved her purple velvet hat more than anything in the world. It had belonged to her grandmother, and Lily swore it was filled with magic.

"You're silly," said her big brother, Marcus. "It's just an old hat."

But Lily knew better. One afternoon, while wearing her hat and watching her pet goldfish, Finnegan, swimming in his bowl, something extraordinary happened. Finnegan — usually just a tiny orange fish — suddenly spoke!

"Lily!" said Finnegan. "Your hat has opened a doorway to the Dream Kingdom!"

Before Lily could ask how a goldfish was talking, she felt herself growing smaller and smaller. The next thing she knew, she was swimming alongside Finnegan through sparkly blue water that tasted like blueberry juice.

They emerged into a magical land where flowers sang and clouds were made of cotton candy. There, waiting for them, was a magnificent sphinx with golden wings and kind purple eyes.

"Welcome, brave adventurer," said the sphinx in a voice like gentle chimes. "I have been waiting for you."

The sphinx explained that a lonely toy zombie named Zeb had wandered away from his owner and was lost in the Dream Kingdom. Zeb wasn't scary at all — he was just a green stuffed toy who wanted to make friends, but everyone ran away because he looked different.

"Will you help him?" asked the sphinx.

Lily nodded. With Finnegan swimming beside her and the sphinx flying above, she journeyed through candy forests and starlight meadows until they found Zeb sitting sadly on a mushroom.

Zeb had messy orange hair and a friendly smile stitched onto his face. "I just wanted someone to play with," he said softly.

Lily took Zeb's hand. "I'll be your friend!"

The sphinx smiled. "Kindness sees past appearances. That is the greatest magic of all."

When Lily woke up, she was back in her room, her purple hat still on her head. But there, sitting on her pillow, was a tiny green toy zombie with orange hair — Zeb, come from the dream world to be her real friend.

And sometimes, if she looked closely at Finnegan's bowl, she could see the sphinx's reflection winking at her from the water.

Lily learned that day that magic is real, but friendship is the greatest magic of all — and that her grandmother's hat had been right all along.
