The Magical Garden Zombie

Lily loved her grandmother's garden, especially the patch where the greenest spinach grew. Every afternoon, she'd skip through the gate with Barnaby, her spotted dog with one ear that stood up and one that flopped down.

One stormy evening, while lightning crackled across the purple sky, Lily discovered something amazing. The spinach leaves were glowing! Each time lightning flashed, the spinach shimmered like tiny green stars.

"Barnaby, look!" Lily whispered.

Suddenly, a figure shuffled from behind the old oak tree. It looked like a zombie from storybooks—ragged clothes, slow movements, greenish skin. Barnaby whimpered and hid behind Lily's legs.

But then the zombie spoke. "Would you... perhaps... have a watering can? My garden is so... thirsty."

Lily gasped. "You're not scary! You're just... thirsty!"

The zombie blinked his surprisingly kind eyes. "I'm not a zombie. I'm Zola, the Garden Keeper. But I'm very tired because my magic spinach won't grow without rain."

Lily's eyes widened. "Your spinach glows?"

"Only when lightning strikes!" Zola said. "It gives the leaves magic power to make anyone who eats them feel brave. But there hasn't been rain in weeks, and my spinach is wilting."

Lily grabbed her grandmother's biggest watering can. "Barnaby, help!"

Together, the girl, her dog, and the sleepy Zola watered the glowing spinach patch. As the first big drops of rain began to fall, the spinach leaves shimmered brighter than ever.

"Thank you," Zola smiled, his green face looking much healthier already. "For your kindness, take some magic spinach home. It will help you be brave whenever you need it."

That night, Lily dreamed of glowing gardens and kind friends who weren't scary at all. She learned that sometimes things that seem frightening are just misunderstood, and friendship can grow anywhere—even in a magical garden with a sleepy zombie who loved his spinach.

Barnaby slept at the foot of her bed, dreaming of chasing lightning bugs through fields of glowing green leaves.
