The Magical Garden's Night Friend

Lily loved her grandmother's garden more than anything in the world. Every day after school, she'd help water the tomatoes, peas, and the biggest, greenest spinach plants in the whole neighborhood.

One night, Lily couldn't sleep. She crept downstairs and peeked through the kitchen window into the garden. And what she saw made her gasp!

A strange figure was shambling between the rows of vegetables. It moved slowly, with a sort of wobbly walk, and made soft mumbling sounds. Lily's eyes went wide – it looked just like the zombie from her storybooks!

But this zombie wasn't scary at all. It was wearing a floppy purple hat with yellow stars, and it was carefully tending to each plant. The zombie picked weeds, watered thirsty flowers, and even sang little lullabies to the growing vegetables.

Lily opened the window quietly. "Hello?" she whispered.

The zombie jumped! Its purple hat flopped over its eyes. "Oh my!" it said in a gentle, creaky voice. "I didn't think anyone would be awake!"

"What are you doing?" Lily asked.

"I'm Zomby," the creature smiled. "Every night, I come to help magical gardens grow. See this spinach?" Zomby pointed to the biggest plant. "This is special moon-glow spinach. It makes people kind and strong. But it only grows when someone cares for it with love."

Zomby adjusted the purple hat. "This hat was given to me by the Moon Fairy herself. It lets me talk to plants and understand what they need."

Lily's eyes sparkled. "Can I help?"

Zomby's green face lit up. "Of course!" Together, they watered and sang to the plants until dawn. When Lily woke up the next morning, she found a note on her pillow: "Thank you for being my friend. Come tonight, and I'll show you the dancing carrots! – Zomby"

And from that night on, Lily learned that sometimes the things that seem scary at first can turn out to be the most wonderful friends of all.
