The Magic Water Garden

Lily loved her garden, but the spinach patch behind the old oak tree was her favorite place. The leaves shimmered with tiny rainbows when the sun touched them, and her grandma always said, 'That spinach has a sprinkle of magic in its roots.'

One afternoon, Lily's friend Oliver came riding his bicycle down the dirt path, but he didn't wave or smile. He kicked at the dirt and wouldn't look at her.

'What's wrong?' Lily asked, kneeling beside her spinach plants.

'My cat Mittens is missing,' Oliver whispered, his voice cracking. 'Nobody can find her. Not even my dad.'

Lily's heart hurt for her friend. She remembered what her grandmother had told her: 'The magic spinach doesn't just grow food. It grows answers, but only when you water it with water from the wishing spring.'

She grabbed her favorite watering can and ran toward the creek where the water flowed over smooth stones that sparkled like diamonds. The water there felt different—warmer than other water, almost like it was humming with happiness.

Lily filled her can and hurried back. She poured the magical water over the spinach plants, watching as the leaves stretched upward, taller and greener than before. Something glittered near the roots—a small green leaf shaped like a cat's ear.

Oliver gasped. 'It looks like...' He grabbed the special leaf and held it up. 'Mittens loves this kind of plant! She always sleeps in the patch behind my house where these grow wild!'

They ran together to Oliver's yard, and there, curled up in a patch of wild green leaves, was Mittens, purring so loudly they could hear her from across the garden.

'The spinach showed us where to look!' Oliver hugged his cat tight. 'You're the best friend ever.' Lily smiled, watching the spinach leaves dancing in the breeze, knowing that magic was real—and it grew in the most unexpected places.

From that day on, Lily and Oliver always kept a bowl of fresh water and spinach leaves in the garden, just in case anyone else needed a little bit of magic to find their way home.
