The Magic Pyramid in the Garden

Lily was digging in her garden when her shovel hit something hard. She brushed away the dirt and gasped. It was a tiny golden pyramid, no bigger than her thumb, but it sparkled like captured sunshine.

"What are you?" she whispered.

Suddenly, the pyramid began to glow. A swirl of sparkles filled the air, and when they settled, Lily wasn't in her garden anymore. She stood in a magical meadow where the grass was pink and the sky swirled with colors like cotton candy.

"You came!" squeaked a familiar voice. Lily looked down to see her goldfish, Bubbles, swimming through the air beside her. In this magical place, Bubbles was huge—bigger than a beach ball—and could fly!

"Where are we?" Lily asked.

A sleek orange fox stepped out from behind a mushroom. "This is the Between World," he said wisely. "I'm Finnegan. And that lazy creature up there is..."

"I'm not lazy!" A fluffy black cat dropped from a floating tree branch. "I'm strategic. I'm Mittens. Welcome, Lily. We've been waiting for you."

"Waiting for me?"

"The pyramid chose you," Finnegan explained. "But something's wrong. Look at the flowers."

Lily looked. The beautiful flowers were drooping, moving in slow, jerky motions like zombie dancers in a funny movie. They weren't scary—just sad and sleepy.

"They're zombie flowers," Bubbles bubbled. "The magic is fading because someone forgot to use their imagination. Children stopped believing in magic, and now the Between World is going to sleep forever."

"No!" Lily cried. "I believe in magic! I DO!"

"Then show us," Mittens said. "Close your eyes and imagine something impossible."

Lily squeezed her eyes shut. She imagined flowers that could sing. She imagined clouds you could bounce on like trampolines. She imagined that every time someone laughed, a new star would be born.

The gold pyramid in her pocket grew warm. When she opened her eyes, the zombie flowers were standing tall. They weren't jerky and slow anymore—they were blooming in brilliant colors: purple stripes, rainbow polka dots, glowing silver edges.

"You did it!" Finnegan cheered. "You remembered how to dream!"

The fox, cat, and goldfish all hugged her (Bubbles gave a slightly wet hug). As the pyramid's glow faded, Lily found herself back in her garden, still holding the tiny pyramid.

That night, she kept it on her nightstand. And sometimes, when she couldn't sleep, she'd close her eyes and remember: magic is real, as long as you remember to imagine.

Somewhere between awake and dreams, a fox, a cat, and a flying goldfish were waiting for her next visit.
