The Magic Pool's Secret Friend

Lily pushed aside the tall grass behind her garage and gasped. There, glittering in the sunlight, was a tiny pool she had never seen before. The water shimmered like liquid diamonds.

"Hello there," said a voice. Lily looked down and saw a bright orange goldfish swimming lazily in circles. "I'm Finley. Are you here to help?"

"Help with what?" Lily asked, kneeling beside the water.

"My friend," said Finley sadly. "He lives in the old oak tree. He's... well, he's a zombie. But don't worry! He's the friendly kind."

Lily's eyes grew wide. She had heard about zombies in scary stories, but Finley didn't seem scared at all.

"His name is Zed," Finley explained. "A lonely wizard cast a spell on him years ago. Now Zed shuffles around looking for friends, but everyone runs away because he looks kind of... crumbly and gray."

Lily stood up and peeked around the tree. Sure enough, a lumpy gray figure was sitting on a mossy rock, his messy hair sticking up like dry grass. He looked lonely.

"Go talk to him," said Finley. "You'll see."

Lily took a deep breath and walked toward Zed. "Hello?"

The zombie jumped. His dark eyes widened. "You're... you're not running away?"

"No," said Lily, smiling. "I'm Lily. Finley told me about you. Do you want to play?"

Zed's face crinkled into what looked like a smile. "Nobody's wanted to play with me for three hundred years."

They played tag (Zed was very slow, so Lily always won), told silly stories, and made daisy chains. Zed even let Lily fix his messy hair with some leaves and twigs.

"You're wonderful, Zed," said Lily as the sun began to set.

"And you're the best friend I've ever had," Zed said. A warm golden glow surrounded him. The crumbly grayness fell away like dust, revealing a young boy with bright eyes.

"The spell!" cheered Finley from the pool. "Friendship broke it!"

Zed laughed, spinning around. "I'm me again!"

That night, Lily learned that sometimes the scariest-looking things just need someone brave enough to say hello. And every day after school, she visited the magic pool—where she, Zed, and Finley would have the most wonderful adventures together.
