The Magic Pool's Secret Friend
Lily loved the old swimming pool behind her grandmother's house. It had been empty for years, but Lily knew better. On hot summer days, she would peek through the rusty fence and imagine it filled with sparkling blue water.
One magical afternoon, Lily found the gate unlocked. She pushed it open and gasped. The pool wasn't empty anymore – it was filled with the most beautiful water she had ever seen, shimmering like liquid rainbow.
"Hello?" she called out.
Something moved beneath the surface. Lily stepped back as a figure emerged from the water. It was green and bumpy, with wild seaweed hair flowing everywhere. Lily had seen zombie pictures in her storybooks, but this creature didn't look scary at all.
"I'm Zola," the creature said softly. "I'm the pool's guardian."
Lily's eyes went wide. "But... you look like..."
"A zombie?" Zola laughed, and it sounded like water bubbling over smooth stones. "People always call me that because I'm green and live in water. But I'm really a water sprite! This pool is magical – it grants wishes to children with kind hearts."
Zola shook her seaweed hair, and tiny droplets scattered like diamonds. "But I'm lonely. No one has visited in fifty years."
Lily's heart went out to her. "I'll visit you every day! And I'll bring my friends too. They'll love you once they know how nice you are."
Zola's green face lit up. "Really?"
"Really," Lily promised. "And maybe my first wish can be for you to have some company!"
The pool water glowed golden. Zola smiled, and suddenly two more water sprites appeared – her friends who had been sleeping in the deep end.
"Thank you, Lily," Zola said. "You taught me something wonderful – never judge someone by how they look. True friendship sees with the heart."
That summer, Lily and her friends spent every day by the magic pool, playing with Zola and the other sprites. And Lily learned that the most magical things in life are the friends who accept you exactly as you are, green skin and seaweed hair and all.
