The Magic Pool's Secret
Lily had the craziest hair after swimming – tangled, wild, full of pool chlorine smell. Mom said, "Comb it before dinner!" But Lily was too excited. She'd found something magical behind the old oak tree.
A glowing pool, smaller than a bathtub but deeper than the ocean, shimmered with rainbow lights. Her iPhone slipped from her pocket – plop! – right into the water.
"NO!" Lily cried. But then... bubbles. Green ones, purple ones, golden ones. Up rose a creature. Green skin, messy hair, clothes that looked like they'd been through a hurricane.
"I'm Zed!" it said. "Pool guardian! And I believe this is yours?" It held up her iPhone, perfectly dry.
Lily gasped. "You look like... like a zombie!"
Zed laughed, a sound like sparklers crackling. "Zombies are scary monsters from stories. I'm a ZOMPIRE! Magical pool creature. See?" He showed her his hands – they could turn into anything! A spoon, a flower, a butterfly!
"My hair is always messy because I'm thinking of new things to create!" Zed said. "Want to see?"
He wiggled his wild green hair and POOF! Beautiful glass butterflies filled the air. Then toy boats. Then ice cream that tasted like summer wishes.
Lily spent the afternoon with Zed. He taught her that things aren't always what they seem. "Scary-looking can be magical. Different can be wonderful," Zed said.
When Mom called for dinner, Lily's hair was still messy. But now she didn't mind.
"Same time tomorrow?" Zed asked.
Lily grinned. "With my comb this time. Maybe we can fix YOUR hair!"
That night, Lily fell asleep dreaming of rainbow pools and magical friends who teach us that the best discoveries come when we look past appearances.
