The Magic Pool's Secret

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's backyard. It was full of hiding places and mysterious corners. But her favorite spot was the old swimming pool behind the garden wall. The pool hadn't been used in years, and lily pads covered most of the water.

One hot afternoon, Lily sat by the pool, dangling her feet in the cool water. She was playing on her iphone when something strange happened. The water began to shimmer and sparkle like diamonds. Suddenly, a creature rose from the pool — not a frog or fish, but a tiny sphinx no bigger than a cat!

The sphinx had golden fur, mysterious amber eyes, and small wings that fluttered nervously.

"Hello," said the sphinx in a voice like chimes. "I've been trapped in this pool for three hundred years. Will you help me?"

Lily's eyes grew wide. "A real sphinx! But how can I help?"

"You must answer my riddle," the sphinx said. "Listen carefully: I have cities but no houses, mountains but no trees, water but no fish. What am I?"

Lily thought hard. She looked at the sphinx, then at her phone, then around the garden. Suddenly, she smiled.

"A map!"

The sphinx's eyes twinkled. "Correct! You are clever and kind." With a burst of golden light, the sphinx grew to full size and flew gracefully into the sky. But before leaving, she circled back.

"Thank you for freeing me," the sphinx called down. "You have proven yourself to be a true friend — one who listens carefully and thinks with their heart. Remember, the best adventures come from helping others."

Lily waved as the sphinx disappeared into the clouds, her golden scales glittering in the sunlight. The pool returned to normal, but Lily knew she would never forget the day magic appeared in her own backyard.

That evening, Lily told her grandmother all about the sphinx and the riddle. Her grandmother smiled knowingly and patted Lily's hand. "The pool has always been magical, dear. It only reveals its secrets to those with kind hearts and curious minds."

Lily went to bed that night feeling special, wondering what other magical secrets might be hiding in plain sight, just waiting for a friend to find them.
