The Magic Pool's Secret
Lily hated spinach. Every time her mom served those green leaves for dinner, Lily would push them around her plate and make a face.
One hot summer afternoon, Lily was playing in the woods behind her house when she discovered something she'd never seen before. Tucked between two ancient oak trees was a small pool of crystal-clear water. But what made Lily gasp was what grew around it—emerald-green spinach leaves, each one sparkling like tiny stars.
"Who's there?" a deep, rumbly voice called out.
Lily froze. From behind a bush emerged the biggest, fluffiest bear she had ever seen. But this bear was wearing a bright red apron and holding a wooden spoon.
"I'm Bruno," the bear said with a gentle smile. "And this is my magic pool."
"Magic?" Lily whispered, her eyes wide.
Bruno nodded. "The spinach that grows here gives anyone who eats it the power to understand animals. But only those with brave hearts can find it."
He offered Lily a single sparkling leaf. Though she wanted to run away, something about Bruno's kind eyes made her trust him. She took a small bite.
Suddenly, the woods came alive! Birds chirped greetings, squirrels chattered about where they'd hidden their acorns, and even the old oak tree hummed a sleepy song.
"You have a brave heart, Lily," Bruno said, patting her shoulder with his big paw. "Sometimes the things we think we'll hate can turn out to be wonderful."
Lily visited the magic pool every day that summer. She and Bruno became the best of friends, and the animals taught her their secrets. When school started again, Lily didn't push her spinach around her plate anymore.
She knew that sometimes, the most wonderful discoveries come from being brave enough to try something new.
