The Magic Pool Party

Lily loved running through the sunny garden with her golden dog, Sunny. Every afternoon, they would race past the fruit trees, their feet and paws thumping happily on the soft grass.

Behind their house stood an old swimming pool that nobody had used in years. But today, Lily noticed something strange. Green vines covered the pool, and papayas grew all around it—bright and orange like little suns.

'Hello?' called a voice.

Lily and Sunny jumped! From behind the papaya bushes stepped a zombie. But this wasn't a scary zombie. He had rosy cheeks, flowered swimming trunks, and the friendliest smile Lily had ever seen.

'Hello,' said Lily bravely. Sunny wagged his tail.

'I'm Zed,' said the zombie. 'I'm the magical pool keeper! This pool turns ordinary water into magical fruit punch.' He tossed a papaya into the water. SPLASH! The water turned pink and bubbly.

Zed looked sad. 'But nobody ever comes to my parties. They run away because they think zombies are scary.'

Lily's heart went out to him. 'That's not fair! My mom says we should never judge someone by how they look.' She grabbed a papaya. 'I'll have a pool party with you!'

Soon, all the neighborhood kids arrived. Nobody was scared of Zed once they saw his kind smile and magical pool. They spent the whole afternoon running, swimming in the pink punch-water, and sharing papayas with Sunny.

Zed was the happiest zombie in the world.

That night, Lily learned something wonderful: Sometimes the most unexpected friends make the best friends of all—and magical pool parties are even better when everyone's invited.
