The Magic Pool of Wishes
Lily lived in a house at the edge of Whispering Woods, and every day after school, she would peek between the tall pine trees, wondering what magical things might be hidden there. Her family had just moved to town, and she hadn't made a single friend yet.
One Tuesday afternoon, while exploring deeper than usual, Lily discovered something extraordinary—a circular pool of crystal-clear water, shimmering like liquid diamonds in a sunlit clearing. The water was so still it looked like glass, except for the tiny ripples that danced across its surface even though there was no wind.
"Hello," she whispered, leaning closer.
The pool rippled again, forming perfect circles that spread outward. Then, something magical happened. The water began to glow softly, and an image appeared in its reflection—not Lily's own face, but a girl about her age with wild curly hair and a missing front tooth, sitting alone on a swing set at the park.
Lily gasped. That was the new girl from her class!
"That's Maya," she said aloud.
The water shimmered again, and words formed across its surface: BE BRAVE. SAY HELLO.
Lily's heart fluttered like a trapped butterfly. She had wanted to talk to Maya so many times but never found the courage.
The pool seemed to understand her fear. Small waves splashed gently against the rocks, and Lily understood what the magic pool was telling her—friendship is like water. It flows freely when you let it, nourishes everything it touches, and can be gentle enough to hold a flower petal or strong enough to move mountains.
"Thank you," Lily said to the pool.
She ran all the way to the park, where Maya was still swinging. Lily took a deep breath, remembered the pool's brave ripples, and called out, "Hi! I'm Lily. Want to play?"
Maya's face lit up like sunshine. "I've been hoping someone would ask!"
They played until sunset, and when Lily returned to Whispering Woods to show her new friend the magic pool, it was gone. Only a patch of soft moss remained where the water had been.
But Lily understood. The pool had done its job. The real magic wasn't in the water at all—it had been inside her all along, waiting to be brave enough to share it with someone else.
And that, Lily knew, was the greatest magic of all.
