The Magic Pool Match

Lily had the curliest, craziest red hair in all of Willowbrook Village. It bounced when she walked, puffed when she ran, and tangled into wild clouds whenever she played. The other children sometimes giggled, but Lily didn't mind—her hair made her feel like a sunset that got stuck on her head!

One sunny afternoon, Lily heard strange sounds coming from behind Old Mrs. Piper's house. Thwack! Thwack! Click-clack-boom!

Peering through the garden fence, Lily gasped. A sleek orange fox with the fluffiest tail she'd ever seen was hitting a ball against a wooden wall with a small racquet. The fox was playing padel! Thwack! The ball bounced perfectly. The fox leaped, twisted, and hit it back—then noticed Lily watching.

"I'm Ferdinand," said the fox, setting down his racquet. "And you have magnificent hair. It looks like cherry blossoms caught in a windstorm!"

Lily beamed. No one had ever said her hair was magnificent before!

"Would you like to play?" Ferdinand asked. "But we can't play here. We need the magic pool."

He led her through the forest, past whispering willow trees and sparkling streams, until they reached a crystal-clear pool hidden in a grove of ancient oaks. The water shimmered with rainbow light.

"This pool shows your dreams while you play," Ferdinand whispered.

And so they played padel together—fox and girl, racquet and ball. With every hit, images formed in the pool: Lily flying among stars, Ferdinand wearing a crown of flowers, both of them eating ice cream clouds that tasted like cotton candy.

"The pool shows us that we're both looking for friends," said Lily softly.

Ferdinand's nose wiggled happily. "The magic wasn't the pool. It was finding someone who wanted to play."

From that day on, Lily and Ferdinand met every afternoon by the magic pool. And if you ever visit Willowbrook and see a fox and a girl with wild, curly hair playing padel in a sun-dappled garden, wave hello—they'll probably invite you to join their game.
