The Magic Pool in the Palm Garden
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's backyard, but today something was different. Where the old oak tree used to stand, there was now a sparkling blue pool, surrounded by towering palm trees that swayed in the warm breeze.
"Grandma!" Lily called out, but the house was quiet. She knelt beside the pool and gasped—her reflection wasn't alone. Another girl smiled back at her, with flowers in her hair and skin that shimmered like moonlight.
"Hello," said the girl, stepping right through the water as if it were air. "I'm Mara. I've been waiting for you."
Lily's eyes went wide. "Waiting for me?"
"Every child finds this pool when they need a friend most." Mara took Lily's hand. Her palm felt warm and tingled with magic. "The pool shows you what's in your heart."
The pool began to glow, and images floated across its surface—Lily feeling lonely at her new school, wishing she had someone to sit with at lunch, missing her old house.
"You're lonely," Mara said softly. "But you're also brave. Remember when you helped that lost kitten?"
Lily nodded. She had carried the kitten three blocks in the rain to find its home.
"That's friendship," Mara said. "Being there when someone needs you. The pool brought me to you, but real friendship—you have to find that yourself."
"Will I ever see you again?" Lily asked as Mara began to fade.
Mara pointed to the palm trees. "Whenever you need courage, stand beneath these palms. They remember everything. And whenever you make a new friend, I'll be smiling too."
Mara disappeared into sparkles of light, and the pool became ordinary again. But Lily's palm still tingled where they'd touched.
At school the next day, Lily noticed a girl sitting alone at lunch. Her heart beat fast. She thought of the palm trees, of Mara's words about courage. She sat down beside the girl.
"Hi," Lily said. "I'm Lily. Want to share my cookies?"
The girl's face lit up. "I'm Ruby! I love cookies."
As they laughed together, Lily felt her palm tingle again, like magic was reminding her: sometimes the most wonderful discoveries come when you're brave enough to reach out.
