The Magic Pool in the Garden

Lily had the wildest hair in town. It curled and bounced like springs, and her mom said it had a mind of its own. One hot summer day, Lily was helping Grandma tend to the garden when she spotted something奇怪 in the old stone pool behind the shed.

"That pool's been dry for years," Grandma said, wiping spinach leaves from her hands. But today, water shimmered in the sunlight.

Lily knelt beside it and gasped. Inside swam a beautiful goldfish with scales like tiny orange stars. The fish looked up at her and seemed to smile.

"Hello," whispered Lily. "Are you magic?"

The goldfish swam in a perfect circle, and suddenly the pool filled with sparkling water that smelled like sunshine and rainbows. A tiny voice bubbled up: "I'm Finn! I've been waiting for someone with hair as wild as their heart."

"You can talk!" Lily cried.

"Only to special friends," Finn said. "Would you like to go swimming?"

Lily dipped her toe in the water, and something amazing happened. She shrank until she was small enough to dive into the pool! The water felt like a warm hug. She found herself swimming beside Finn through underwater gardens where vegetables grew on magical vines.

They passed floating bunches of the greenest spinach, which Finn explained gave swimmers super speed. Lily took a bite and zoomed through the water like a rocket!

For hours they played, racing past toy boats that had fallen in over the years and discovering secret caves. Finn showed her how the pool connected to all the garden hoses in the neighborhood—a hidden water world.

"Time to go home," Finn said as the sun began to set. "But come back whenever you want. Real friends are like good stories—better the second time around."

Lily grew back to her normal size and ran to hug Grandma. "I made a friend!"

Grandma smiled, seeing something magical in Lily's eyes. "The best friendships are the ones that surprise us."

That night, Lily dreamed of underwater adventures and knew that tomorrow, when the sun shone on the garden pool, Finn would be waiting. And sometimes, on quiet summer evenings, if you listen closely, you can hear the sound of someone swimming and laughing in a pool that everyone else thinks is empty.
