The Magic Pool by the Palm
Lily loved the old palm tree in her backyard. Its long leaves waved like green fingers in the breeze. Every summer, she'd sit beneath it and dream.
One hot afternoon, Lily noticed something strange. A small pool of water had formed near the palm tree's trunk. But this wasn't ordinary water—it was the color of a ripe orange!
"Mom! Come see!" Lily called.
Her mother appeared at the back door, smiling. "What is it, sweetie?"
"The palm tree made an orange pool!" Lily danced around it. "It's magic!"
Just then, her friend Tommy climbed over the fence. Tommy loved pretending to be things. Yesterday he was a astronaut. Today, he shuffled toward her with arms stretched out.
"I'm a zombie," Tommy groaned playfully. "BRAINS...but I only eat oranges!"
Lily giggled. "You're silly, Tommy. This pool is actually magic! Look!"
Tommy peered at the orange water. "Whoa. Can we touch it?"
Lily dipped her toe in. The water felt cool and sparkly, like liquid sunshine. Suddenly, the orange color swirled around her foot, and tiny fish made of light appeared!
"It's magic!" Tommy gasped, dropping his zombie act. "Real magic!"
The light-fish swam around their legs, leaving trails of glitter. Lily and Tommy laughed, splashing in the enchanted orange pool beneath the waving palm.
"We should keep this secret," Lily whispered. "Just for us."
Tommy nodded solemnly. "A secret friendship pool."
As the sun began to set, the orange water slowly turned clear again. The magic faded, but something remained—something better than magic.
"Tomorrow?" Tommy asked, climbing back over the fence.
"Tomorrow," Lily promised.
And every day that summer, the palm tree's magic returned, along with her best friend. Because the best magic isn't in orange water or light-fish. The best magic is friendship, shared under the shade of a palm tree.
