The Magic Pool Beyond the Garden

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's huge backyard. It had secret paths beneath rose bushes and ancient trees with branches like twisted fingers. But her favorite discovery was what lay beyond the old wooden fence.

One sunny afternoon, Lily's golden retriever Barnaby started barking excitedly at a loose board in the fence. When Lily peeked through, she gasped. Hidden behind the fence was the most beautiful pool she had ever seen. The water shimmered with colors like rainbow jelly, and tiny silver fish darted beneath the surface.

Barnaby squeezed through first, his tail wagging so hard his whole body wiggled. Lily followed, stepping onto soft moss that felt like a green carpet. But something amazing rose from the water—a small sphinx, no bigger than a cat, with emerald eyes and wings like a butterfly.

"Welcome, young friend," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "I am Cleo, guardian of the Magic Pool. I've been waiting for someone pure of heart."

Barnaby approached cautiously, and Cleo smiled. "A loyal dog—excellent! Wisdom comes to those who are kind to all creatures."

Celo explained that the pool granted one wish to those who could answer her riddle. Lily nodded bravely. "I'm ready!"

"What has four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?" Cleo's eyes sparkled.

Lily thought hard. She looked at Barnaby, who sat patiently watching. Suddenly, she remembered her favorite book of myths!

"A person!" Lily exclaimed. "A baby crawls on four legs, grown-ups walk on two, and elderly people use a cane—three legs!"

Cleo clapped her tiny paws delightedly. "Correct! You may make one wish."

Lily looked at Barnaby, then at the magical pool. "I wish that everyone could have a friend as loyal and loving as Barnaby."

Cleo's eyes shone with tears. "A wise and generous wish." She touched the water with her wing, and golden ripples spread outward. The pool's magic swirled around them like sparkly dust.

When Lily looked down, Barnaby's collar now had a tiny sphinx charm that glowed softly. "This means he'll always be protected," Cleo whispered. "And you, Lily, have shown that the greatest magic is kindness."

As the sun set, Lily and Barnaby returned through the fence. But now, whenever Lily looked at her dog, she saw a tiny sparkle in his eyes—the magic of friendship, granted by a sphinx who knew that some wishes are worth more than gold.
