The Magic Pool Behind the Garden

Lily loved exploring behind her grandmother's garden, where the wild flowers grew taller than her knees. One afternoon, she pushed through a tangle of vines and discovered something she had never seen before—a pool of crystal-clear water that shimmered like liquid sapphires.

The pool wasn't ordinary. When Lily leaned closer, she saw that the water didn't reflect her face. Instead, it showed scenes of places she had never visited: mountains made of cotton candy, rivers flowing with orange juice, and trees that grew glowing books instead of leaves.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" said a tiny voice.

Lily jumped. A small green frog with polka-dot spots sat on a mossy rock at the pool's edge. "I'm Finn," he said. "This is the Magic Pool of Dreams. It shows you what your heart truly wishes for."

Lily looked into the water again. The image changed to show her flying on the back of a giant butterfly over fields of rainbow flowers. "I wish I could have adventures like that," she whispered.

Finn hopped closer. "You can! But first, you must help me. The pool is losing its magic because someone stopped believing in impossible things. Do you know anyone who needs to remember how to dream?"

Lily thought about her little brother, Max, who had become sad after their grandmother got sick. He used to pretend the bathtub was a ocean full of mermaids, but now he only watched videos on his old iPhone.

"I know someone," Lily said. "But how can we help?"

Finn pointed toward a patch of vibrant green leaves growing near the pool. "These are no ordinary plants. This is Magic Dream Spinach. One bite makes you remember that anything is possible if you believe. But you must be quick—the magic fades at sunset!"

Lily gathered the spinach leaves in her skirt. Finn hopped onto her shoulder. Together, they raced back to the house, the spinach leaves glowing softer and softer as the sun dipped lower in the sky.

They found Max sitting on the porch, his phone glowing in his hands. Lily knelt beside him. "Max, I have something special for you. It's called Magic Dream Spinach. One bite, and you'll see that the world is full of magic."

Max looked at her, then at the unusual frog on her shoulder. Something sparkled in his eyes—something that had been missing for a long time. He took a small bite of the spinach.

Suddenly, Max gasped. The iPhone screen wasn't showing videos anymore. It was showing the reflection of his own wide smile, and behind that, the sky turning pink and gold with sunset. "Lily," he whispered, "the clouds look like dragons!"

"They do," Lily said, squeezing his hand. "And if you look closely, that one looks like it's dancing."

Finn the frog nodded from her shoulder. The Magic Pool would stay magical after all, because Max had remembered how to dream.

That night, the siblings lay in the backyard watching the stars, making up stories about everything they saw. And somewhere behind the garden, a small frog smiled, knowing that the magic would last as long as there were children who believed in impossible things.
