The Magic Pool at Midnight

Lily lay in bed, but sleep wouldn't come. Through her window, the full moon cast a silver glow across the backyard. Something sparkled near the swimming pool — something that shimmered like tiny stars had fallen to earth.

Slipping outside in her bare feet, Lily discovered her golden retriever Max already there, tail wagging slowly. The old dog pressed his warm nose against her hand, as if to say, "I've been waiting for you."

Floating in the center of the pool lay a mysterious glowing rectangle. Lily had never seen anything like it — smooth and black, with an apple carved into its back. When she touched it, the screen burst to life with swirls of color, showing pictures of children she'd never met, places she'd never been.

"It's called an iPhone," whispered a voice from the water's reflection. A small girl with water-weed hair appeared on the screen. "I'm Marina. I live in the pool's reflection world, and this is my friend-to-friend phone. It only appears when someone truly needs a friend."

Lily's eyes widened. "But I have Max!" she hugged the dog tight.

"Max is wonderful," Marina's voice rippled like gentle waves, "but everyone needs more than one kind of friend. Sometimes you need someone who understands what it's like to feel lonely, even when you're not alone."

The iPhone showed children from all over the world — some laughing, some reading, some looking sad. "Each of them found this magic phone when they needed it most," Marina explained. "Now they're all friends, connected through moonlight and water reflections. Would you like to join our circle?"

Lily thought about the new girl at school who ate lunch alone. She thought about her cousin who had moved away and missed her terribly.

"Yes," Lily said softly. "But can I share it?"

Marina's smile reflected on the screen. "That's exactly why it chose you."

Max barked softly, and the iPhone dissolved into a thousand fireflies that danced around the pool before disappearing into the night sky.

The next morning, Lily's iPhone sat on her nightstand — ordinary now, but filled with messages from new friends around the world. And somehow, the new girl at school found herself sitting next to Lily at lunch, as if moonlight magic had worked its way into the daylight too.

Some friends have four paws. Some have reflections in pools. And some? Some are just waiting to meet you, if you only say hello first.
