The Magic Palm
Lila was running through the golden meadow, her curly hair bouncing like springy noodles. She loved running more than anything—the wind in her face, the grass beneath her sneakers, the feeling that she could fly if she just ran fast enough.
Her dog Barnaby, a scruffy terrier with one ear that stood up and one that flopped down, was running beside her, barking joyfully at butterflies. Together they were the fastest team in the whole valley.
That's when they saw it—a giant palm tree that hadn't been there yesterday. Its leaves shimmered with rainbow colors, and small silver bells hung from every branch, tinkling in the breeze.
Barnaby stopped running and whimpered softly. Lila knelt down to stroke his soft hair. "It's okay, Barnaby. Let's see what magic this is."
As they approached the palm tree, one coconuts fell from the branches and cracked open. But instead of coconut milk inside, out spilled hundreds of tiny glowing stars that swirled around Lila and Barnaby like fireflies.
A voice came from the palm tree, warm and friendly as a grandmother's hug. "You have discovered the Wishing Palm. I grant one wish to those with the kindest hearts."
Lila thought hard. She could wish for endless candy, or to fly, or for a million toys. But then she looked at Barnaby, who was chasing the glowing stars with pure delight.
"I wish," Lila said clearly, "that every dog who is lonely could find a best friend like Barnaby."
The palm tree rustled its rainbow leaves happily. "That is the kindest wish anyone has made in three hundred years."
Suddenly, the glowing stars shot up into the sky like tiny rockets, spreading across the world. Lila and Barnaby watched as they twinkled down in every direction, carrying friendship to lonely dogs everywhere.
"Thank you," Lila whispered. The palm tree faded away, but in its place stood a small silver bell on a ribbon. Lila tied it around Barnaby's collar, and whenever they went running, the bell would ring—just like the magic palm tree had promised.
From that day on, whenever Lila heard a dog bark in the distance, she knew it wasn't lonely anymore. And Barnaby? He still ran with his floppy ear and his perky ear, the happiest dog in the whole wide world, wearing his magic bell with pride.
