The Magic Orange Friendship
Lily lived in a house with blue shutters and a garden full of flowers. But she had no one to play with. Until the day she found the orange.
It wasn't a normal orange. This orange glowed like a tiny sun in her palm. When she held it close, she heard soft music, like wind chimes dancing in a breeze.
"Follow me," the orange seemed to hum.
Lily followed the glowing fruit past the garden gate, through the meadow where grasshoppers sang, and into the forest where trees whispered secrets. The orange bobbed in the air, leading her deeper into the woods.
Suddenly, Lily heard a sad sound. A lonely sound.
Behind an old oak tree sat a scruffy brown dog with floppy ears and the biggest eyes Lily had ever seen. The dog looked scared and hungry. His fur was matted, and he had no collar.
The orange drifted toward the dog and split itself in two! Half floated to Lily, half to the dog.
Lily took a bite. It tasted like sunshine and rainbows and hopes that come true.
The dog ate his half and his tail began to wag. Slowly, cautiously, he crept closer. Lily held out her hand.
"Friend," the orange whispered, and then both halves disappeared in a sprinkle of golden sparkles.
But something magical remained. The dog licked Lily's hand, and she giggled. His fur felt soft, and his nose was wet and friendly.
"I'll call you Sunny," Lily said, because he had appeared with the glowing orange.
Sunny barked—once, twice, three happy times.
Hand in paw, Lily and her new friend walked home. The orange was gone, but something better had taken its place.
Every evening, they share an ordinary orange from the kitchen. But sometimes, just sometimes, it glows for a split second, reminding them both: the best friendships arrive in unexpected packages.
