The Magic Orange by the Palm Tree
Lily had the curliest, bounciest hair in the whole neighborhood. Every morning, her mother tried to tame it with ribbons and barrettes, but Lily's hair had a mind of its own, springing up like little question marks all over her head.
One hot summer day, Lily sat by the swimming pool in her backyard, dangling her feet in the cool blue water. Beside the pool grew a tall palm tree that Lily called her friend. "Hello, Mr. Palm Tree," she whispered, watching its long leaves sway in the gentle breeze. "What secrets do you have today?"
Suddenly, something bright caught Lily's eye. Nestled among the palm tree's rough bark sat the most beautiful orange she had ever seen. It glowed like a tiny sun, making the ordinary oranges in her kitchen look dull and boring.
Lily reached for it, and the moment her fingers touched the smooth skin, something magical happened. The orange began to hum, and its glow intensified until it filled the whole backyard with golden light.
"Who's there?" called a voice, and Lily looked down to see a small turtle climbing out of the pool.
"I'm Lily," she said, amazed that a turtle was talking to her. "And I found this magic orange."
"That's not just any orange," said the turtle, whose name was Timothy. "That's a Dream Orange. It grants one wish to whoever finds it, but only if the wish comes from a kind heart."
Lily thought about all the things she could wish for — toys, adventures, endless summer vacation. But then she looked at her crazy, curly hair that always made her feel different from the other kids, and she thought about how sometimes people stared or made fun of her springy curls.
"I wish," Lily said slowly, "that everyone could see how beautiful being different can be."
The orange glowed even brighter, then split open to reveal not fruit, but hundreds of tiny butterflies that swirled around Lily, Timothy, and the palm tree. They danced in the air, each one a different color — orange, yellow, pink, and blue.
Lily's hair began to sparkle as if someone had sprinkled magic dust on each curl. The butterflies landed on her shoulders and head, making her look like a fairy princess.
"Your wish has been granted," said Timothy. "From now on, whenever anyone feels different or alone, they'll see you and remember that being unique is wonderful."
The palm tree rustled its leaves as if applauding, and the pool water rippled with rainbow colors.
From that day on, Lily never wished for different hair. She wore her curls with pride, and whenever she saw someone looking sad or lonely, she would smile her biggest smile, letting her hair bounce with joy. And sometimes, when the sun was just right, she could still see tiny butterflies dancing around her palm tree friend, reminding her that the best magic of all is the magic of kindness.
