The Magic Orange Baseball

Lily sat alone on the porch steps, watching the neighborhood kids play baseball across the street. She loved baseball—her dad had taught her how to hit and catch—but she had just moved to town and didn't know anyone yet.

Her grandma came outside with a bowl of fresh-picked oranges from the garden. "You look lonely, little one," she said, pressing the brightest, roundest orange into Lily's hand. "Sometimes the best friends appear when you least expect them."

Lily peeled the orange, but instead of segments, something magical tumbled out—a tiny baseball, glowing golden like sunshine!

"Play with me," whispered a tiny voice.

Lily gasped as the baseball grew to regular size. She grabbed her mitt and ran across the street, where a boy named Max was pitching to himself against a tree.

"Want to play?" Lily called out.

Max's eyes lit up. "I've been waiting for someone to catch with!"

They played until sunset. The magical orange baseball zipped through the air, making every catch feel like catching a star. When Max's team needed one more player for tomorrow's game, Lily didn't hesitate.

"I'll play!" she said.

That night, Lily tucked the now-ordinary baseball under her pillow. It wasn't glowing anymore, but something even better sparkled in her heart—a new friendship that had started with magic and orange juice.

Grandma was right. Sometimes the best friends really do appear when you least expect them.
