The Magic of Palm Tree Lane
Lily loved the old palm tree in her backyard. Its leaves whispered secrets in the wind, and she was sure it was magical. One hot afternoon, she sat beneath it, playing catch with her favorite stuffed bear, Barnaby.
Suddenly, a strange green boy shambled around the corner. His eyes were closed, and his arms stuck out stiffly. "A zombie!" Lily gasped, dropping her baseball glove. She'd heard scary stories about zombies.
But the zombie didn't attack. He simply bumped into the palm tree and mumbled, "So... sleepy..."
Lily peeked around the tree's trunk. Behind it sat a small glass bowl with a goldfish inside. "That's him!" the goldfish bubbled happily. "I'm a magical wish fish! I granted Sammy's wish to stay up all night, but now he's sleepwalking!"
The zombie - whose name was Sammy - yawned enormously and nearly tipped over the goldfish bowl.
"We need to help him wake up properly!" Lily cried. She grabbed her baseball. "Hey Sammy! Want to play?"
The zombie's eyes fluttered open at the word 'play'. Lily tossed the baseball gently. Sammy's stiff arms somehow caught it. A grin spread across his face.
They played catch under the palm tree for an hour. Lily learned that Sammy wasn't scary at all - he was just a lonely boy who had trouble making friends. Barnaby the bear even got to join their game as mascot.
"I'm sorry I judged you," Lily said as the sun began to set. "I thought all zombies were mean."
Sammy smiled. "That's okay. Most people do. But you gave me a chance."
The goldfish swam in a happy circle. "You've learned something important today. Things aren't always what they seem - and kindness can wake anyone up."
From that day on, Lily, Sammy, and Barnaby played baseball under the magical palm tree every afternoon. And Lily never judged anyone by their appearance again.
Sometimes the best friends are the ones you almost didn't meet.
