The Magic of Midnight Storm
Lily loved rainy nights. She would press her nose against the cool window glass, watching the sky dance. Tonight was special – her mom had brought home a tiny goldfish in a bowl. Its scales shimmered like little pieces of sunset.
"His name is Sparkle," Mom said with a wink.
Lily's fluffy dog, Barnaby, wagged his tail so hard his whole body wiggled. He always knew when something magical was about to happen.
Suddenly, lightning flashed across the sky – CRACK! BOOM! The whole house shook.
"Don't be scared," Lily whispered to Barnaby, petting his soft golden fur.
Then something amazing occurred. Sparkle the goldfish began to glow! A tiny spark of light danced from his bowl, growing brighter and brighter until – POOF! – a tiny fish with shimmering wings floated in the air.
"Thank you for rescuing me," Sparkle said in a voice like twinkling bells. "I'm a magic fish, and I've been waiting for a lightning storm to grant you one wish."
Lily couldn't believe her ears. A talking fish!
But before she could speak, her older brother Max burst into the room, wearing his scary zombie mask from Halloween. "ROAAAAR!" he shouted.
Barnaby barked bravely, standing between Lily and the monster. Lily felt her heart race.
"Max, stop!" she cried, but then she noticed something strange. The zombie costume wasn't moving right. The arms dangled loosely, the mask tilted sideways – and then she saw Max peeking out from behind the door, laughing.
"Got you!" Max grinned, pulling off the mask. "I put my costume on my old mannequin!"
Lily let out her breath and started giggling. Barnaby joined in, his tail thumping happily.
Sparkle the magic fish smiled too. "You were very brave, Lily. And you, Barnaby – a true friend protects others. For your courage and kindness, I grant your wish."
"My wish?" Lily thought carefully. "I wish that Max would include me in his games instead of scaring me."
Sparkle glowed even brighter. "Granted! But magic works both ways – you must be kind too."
Max looked down at his feet. "I'm sorry, Lil. Want to build a blanket fort together?"
"Yes!" Lily cheered.
As the three children and one brave dog built their fort under the glow of Sparkle's magic light, Lily learned something wonderful: sometimes the scariest things aren't scary at all, and the best magic is the magic of friendship and forgiveness.
The lightning storm raged on outside, but inside, everything was warm and bright.
