The Magic in the Wishing Well
Lily had the most wonderful dog in the whole world. Barnaby was a golden retriever with fluffy fur like sunshine and a tail that never stopped wagging. Every afternoon, they would walk to the old wishing well behind Lily's house.
One day, Lily was playing with her mom's iPhone near the well. She was taking pictures of Barnaby when—oops! The phone slipped right out of her hands and splash! It fell right into the water below.
"Oh no!" Lily cried. But Barnaby didn't panic. He put his front paws on the stone edge and looked down into the deep, dark water. His tail gave a curious little wag.
Suddenly, something magical happened. The water began to glow with a soft blue light, and tiny sparkles floated up like captured stars. Lily peered over the edge and gasped. There, floating in the water, was her iPhone—but it wasn't ruined. Instead, it was glowing, and on its screen, Lily could see something amazing.
A tiny mermaid with sea-foam hair was waving at her! The mermaid pointed to something shiny tangled in seaweed at the bottom of the well. It was a beautiful silver key.
Barnaby barked happily and nudged Lily's hand. The little mermaid seemed to be asking for help. Lily knew what she had to do.
The next morning, Lily and Barnaby came back with a long string and a magnet. Carefully, they lowered it into the water. When the magnet touched the silver key, it clicked! The mermaid clapped her hands, and the water sparkled even brighter.
As soon as they pulled the key up, the most wonderful thing happened. The water in the well swirled like a rainbow, and hundreds of tiny glowing butterflies flew out, dancing around Lily and Barnaby.
The little mermaid appeared at the top of the well, no bigger than Lily's hand. "Thank you!" she sang in a voice like wind chimes. "That key unlocks the magic that keeps all the wishing wells in the world full of wonder. You saved the magic!"
She gave Lily a magical seashell. "Whenever you need help, just whisper into this shell. Barnaby will hear you, no matter where you are."
From that day on, whenever Lily whispered into the shell, Barnaby would come running, tail wagging, ready for their next adventure. And sometimes, if they looked very carefully into the water, they could still see the little mermaid waving back.
Lily learned that some accidents lead to the most wonderful discoveries, and that true friends—whether they have two legs or four—will always help you find the magic in the world.
