The Magic in the Pool
Lily sat by the edge of her backyard pool, dangling her feet in the cool water. It was a hot summer day, perfect for swimming, but Lily didn't feel like swimming. She didn't feel like doing anything except staring at her iPhone, watching other kids have adventures on her screen.
"You're missing the real magic," a tiny voice said.
Lily looked around. No one was there. Then she spotted him—a tiny goldfish swimming near the surface of the pool. He had shimmering orange scales and the most curious eyes.
"Did you just speak?" Lily asked, setting down her iPhone.
"I'm Finn," said the goldfish. "And yes, I speak. Most humans don't notice because they're always looking at those glowing boxes."
Lily felt her cheeks get warm. "Sorry. I was just..."
"Missing the adventure right in front of you," Finn finished. "Hop in!"
"But I can't breathe underwater!"
"Not with that attitude," Finn bubbled. "Trust me?"
Something about his confident smile made Lily slide into the pool. As soon as she was fully underwater, the most amazing thing happened—she could breathe!
The pool had transformed into an underwater kingdom. Tiny fish with rainbow tails danced around coral rocks that hadn't been there before. Pearl bubbles floated upward like little floating dreams.
"Welcome to the Hidden Kingdom," Finn said proudly. "We only reveal ourselves to those who take their eyes off their screens and really look."
Lily swam alongside Finn for what felt like hours, playing tag with friendly fish and discovering secret caves. She felt more alive than she had in months.
When she finally surfaced, her iPhone sat forgotten on the pool edge.
"Will I see you again?" Lily asked.
"Every time you choose the real world over the screen one," Finn promised. "The magic is always here, waiting for you to notice it."
That night, Lily didn't pick up her iPhone once. Instead, she fell asleep dreaming of rainbow fish and friendship found in the most unexpected places. She had discovered something far better than any app—the magic of being present in the moment.
