The Magic in My Palm

Lily was six years old, and she had never seen anything like it. When she opened her hand that morning, something shimmered in her palm—a tiny goldfish no bigger than her thumbnail!

"You're not a regular fish, are you?" she whispered, her eyes wide with wonder.

The goldfish shook its head and suddenly spoke in a voice like tiny bells: "No, Lily. I'm your magical friend, and I need your help!"

Lily nearly dropped it! "A talking goldfish? In MY hand? This is the best day ever!"

"My name is Fin, and I've lost something very special," explained the little fish. "I dropped a magic leaf in your garden yesterday. It looks like ordinary spinach, but it's actually enchanted!

Lily's eyes sparkled. "You mean the green leaves Mom planted? She said they were just vegetables!"

"Those are the ones!" Fin swished his golden tail excitedly. "They're not just spinach—they're wishing leaves! When someone eats them with a pure heart, their wish comes true. But only once per leaf!"

Lily's heart raced with excitement. "We have to find them before Mom cooks them for dinner!" She gently placed Fin in her pocket and ran to the garden.

There, in the vegetable patch, was the most beautiful spinach Lily had ever seen—each leaf glimmered with a soft, magical light.

"Quick, Lily!" Fin whispered from her pocket. "Pick one leaf and make your wish! But choose wisely!"

Lily thought very hard. What did she want most? Toys? Candy? A pony?

Then she knew.

She picked the shiniest leaf, closed her eyes, and wished: "I wish that Fin could be big enough to swim in a real pond and have adventures forever!"

POOF! Green sparkles filled the air!

When they cleared, Fin was swimming in a beautiful pond that appeared as if by magic. He was still gold and still magical, but now he had room to swim and play.

"Thank you, Lily!" Fin called happily. "You used your wish for someone else! That's the purest heart of all!" The spinach leaves shimmered. "And because you were so kind, here's my gift—every year, on your birthday, one magic leaf will grow back!"

Lily smiled, waving as Fin swam off to adventure. Sometimes, she discovered, the best wishes are the ones you make for others.
