The Magic Hat's Splash
Leo found the old baseball hat in his grandmother's attic. It was bright red with a silver star on the front. When he put it on, something magical happened.
The hat whispered to him, "Go to the pond at sunset."
Leo grabbed his favorite baseball and ran to the water's edge. The pond sparkled golden in the evening light. He tossed his baseball up and down, waiting.
Suddenly, the water began to bubble. A green creature emerged - not scary, but silly-looking, with seaweed hair and a friendly smile. It looked like a zombie from his storybooks, but this creature danced and waved!
"I'm Splash!" the creature said. "And you must be wearing the Magic Friendship Hat!"
Leo laughed. "You're a zombie?"
"A water zombie!" Splash grinned. "I've waited 100 years for someone with the Magic Hat to come play baseball with me!"
Leo threw the baseball. Splash caught it easily, even with slippery webbed hands. They played catch as the sun went down, the baseball making splashes every time Splash missed.
"Best friend ever," Leo said, panting happily.
"The hat knew," Splash said. "Magic hats always bring friends together."
That night, Leo hung the red hat on his bedpost. Every sunset, he and Splash played baseball by the water. And sometimes, Leo swore he saw the hat's silver star twinkling, as if smiling too.
Some things seem scary at first glance. But friendship, like magic, can surprise you in the most wonderful ways.
