The Magic Hat's Secret Pool

Lily found the hat on the first day of summer vacation. It sat on her grandmother's attic windowsill, dusty and purple with a silver star sewn on the front. When Lily put it on, something magical happened.

"Where would you like to go?" a tiny voice whispered from inside the hat.

Lily jumped, then laughed. "Somewhere wonderful! Somewhere I've never been before!"

The hat began to glow. Suddenly, Lily wasn't in the attic anymore. She stood beside the most beautiful pool she had ever seen. The water wasn't blue—it was rainbow-colored, swirling with pinks and greens and golds. Tiny fish made of light swam in circles, leaving trails of sparkle wherever they went.

"Welcome to the Wishing Pool," said a deep voice.

Lily turned to see a magnificent bull standing beside her. But this wasn't an ordinary bull. His fur was silver and shimmered like moonlight. His horns were made of crystal, and his eyes held the wisdom of a thousand years.

"I'm Ferdinand," the bull said gently. "I guard this pool. Make a wish, and if your heart is pure, it will come true."

Lily thought hard. She could wish for anything—endless candy, a rocket ship, all the toys in the world. But then she remembered her friend Marcus, who had been sad lately because his dog had run away.

"I wish Marcus could find his dog Buster," Lily said. "He misses him so much."

The pool's rainbow swirled faster. Ferdinand nodded his crystal-horned head. "A wish for another is the most powerful magic of all."

The hat glowed brighter than ever, and suddenly Lily was back in the attic. Outside, she heard barking. She ran to the window and saw Marcus in his yard, hugging Buster so tight.

Lily touched the purple hat. "Thank you," she whispered.

The hat didn't answer, but Lily understood. The real magic hadn't been the pool or the crystal-horned bull. The real magic was kindness. And that was something she could carry with her always, with or without a magic hat.

She placed the hat back on the windowsill, ready for the next adventure—and the next kindness.
