The Magic Hat's Secret Friend

Lily had the craziest hair in her whole class. It bounced when she walked and curled around her ears like two friendly springs. Her mama tried to tame it with ribbons and barrettes, but Lily's hair had a mind of its own.

One windy afternoon, Lily found an old cable behind the garage. It sparkled with rainbow colors that nobody else could see. When she wound it around her favorite purple hat, something magical happened—the hat began to glow!

"Whoa!" Lily whispered, slipping the hat onto her wild head. "What do you do?"

A voice came from nowhere. "I bring friends to life!" The cable pulsed like a heartbeat.

Lily grabbed her stuffed zombie, Mr. ZombiBob. He had green fur, one googly eye, and a missing button from his shirt. Lily had made him at school, and some kids said zombies were scary. But Lily knew better.

"Be alive!" she wished, touching her hat.

Mr. ZombiBob blinked his googly eye. "Hello, friend!" he said in a squeaky voice. "I've always wanted to dance!"

Lily laughed as her zombie toy started hopping around her room. She tried to show him to her friends, but whenever she took off the magic hat, Mr. ZombiBob went back to being just a stuffed toy.

"They won't believe me," Lily told her hair, which seemed to nod understandingly.

That's when she understood: the real magic wasn't the hat or the special cable at all. It was her imagination! And imagination is something everyone has.

The next day, Lily brought her wild-haired self, her purple hat, and plain old Mr. ZombiBob to school. During recess, she told the most amazing story about a zombie who loved to dance and make friends. Soon, everyone was pretending their toys were alive too.

Lily's hair bounced with joy. The best magic is the kind we share!
