The Magic Hat's Secret Friend

Lily loved her backyard swimming pool more than anything in the world. Every summer day, she'd splash and dive until her fingers turned wrinkly. But this summer something strange happened.

One hot afternoon, Lily found an old purple hat floating in the water. It had sequins that sparkled like tiny stars and a wide floppy brim. When she put it on, the pool water began to glow.

Suddenly, the water bubbled and splashed. Up rose a green creature with stitch marks on his face and kind, sleepy eyes. Lily gasped – he looked like a zombie!

But this wasn't a scary monster. "Hello," he said in a gentle voice. "I'm Zed, and I've been sleeping in this magical pool for one hundred years. Your hat woke me up!"

Lily's fear melted away. "You're not going to eat brains?"

Zed laughed, a sound like popping bubbles. "No! I eat water lilies and make wishes come true. Whoever wears the magic hat can see the real me."

That afternoon, Zed showed Lily amazing pool magic. He made fountains of rainbow water, taught fish to sing, and created waves that shaped into dancing dolphins. Lily had never had such a wonderful adventure.

But soon the sun began to set. "I have to go home for dinner," Lily said sadly. "Will I ever see you again?"

Zed patted her hand with his cool green fingers. "Whenever you wear the magic hat and visit the pool, I'll be here. But remember – the best magic is the kindness you share with others."

Lily skipped home, the purple hat in her hand. She couldn't wait for tomorrow's pool adventure with her new friend. Sometimes the most surprising friendships are the most wonderful ones.
