The Magic Hat's Secret

friendhatzombie

Leo found the hat in his grandmother's attic. It was purple with silver stars that seemed to twinkle, even in the dusty darkness. When he put it on, the attic walls shimmered and dissolved.

Suddenly, Leo stood in a forest where the trees were made of candy corn and the leaves were orange and black like Halloween. A small figure shuffled toward him - a zombie, but not like the scary ones in movies. This one wore polka-dot clothes and had the saddest eyes Leo had ever seen.

"Are you going to eat my brains?" Leo asked, trying to sound brave.

The zombie shook its head. "No. I just want someone to play with. Everyone runs away when they see me."

Leo's heart softened. "I'm Leo. What's your name?"

"Zombie-Zoe," she said, smiling crookedly. "Want to see my favorite tree? It grows friendship bracelets!"

They spent the afternoon playing. Zoe showed Leo how to make pumpkins giggle by tickling their stems. Leo taught Zoe how to skip. They laughed so hard that Zoe's gray skin turned pink with happiness.

"The magic hat brought me here," Leo said. "But I have to go home soon."

Zoe's smile faded. "I'll be lonely again."

Leo thought hard. "Take my hat! You can visit me anytime. We can be real friends."

Zoe's eyes widened. "Really?"

"Really. A true friend is someone who sees you, not just what you look like."

When Leo woke in the attic, the hat was gone. But in his pocket was a friendship bracelet made of candy corn leaves. And from that day on, whenever the wind blew, Leo could hear a familiar giggle, and sometimes, just sometimes, he'd see a purple hat with twinkling stars waiting for his next adventure.

Because the best magic isn't in hats or Halloween - it's in kindness and the courage to see the friend inside everyone.
